Five-spot Tula M91

Post by krinko » Sat Jan 27, 2007 9:28 pm

Here is my 1924 Tula, in all it's glory---

The stock seems to be walnut, but lacks stamps that might indicate Westinghouse or Remington manufacture.

The recoil bolt is centered in the fingergroove.

Bolt does not match but has been numbered on the top of the knob in the Finnish manner---the rifle also has the screw-through Finnish type sling hangers. No "SA" stamp, though.

Here's the odd five-spot.

Originally, I thought this was just random Grafitti---but I saw the same mark on another '91, while someone else was buying it and two marks aren't random.

Anybody seen any others?

ROCKWELL HARDNESS MARKS

Post by RGRWJB » Sun Jan 28, 2007 11:29 am

I know that the Finns rockwell tested the round receiver guns they rebarrled like the Tikka 91/30s. They used three punch marks like those listed in this photo.

I looked over, around, and at the Mosins To which I have access. I found three with the five spot markings that you show, in approx. the same location as yours. Two are New England Westinghouse, 366XXX and 1293XXX, and the other is a 1st Firearms factory, RSFSR 1922, This was made earlier in the same factory as yours when it was part of the Russian Federated Socialist Republic, before it became the USSR. None of these have Finn SA markings but all show lots of wear. One Westinghouse barrel is almost shot out but still shows remnants of rifling. Any others?
