What Idiot Would Buy A Gun & No Ammo Available?

This forum is for all other rifles and hand guns that we have an interest in. They need not be of military origin nor C&R.

What Idiot Would Buy A Gun & No Ammo Available?

Post by ajcarey » Sat Sep 18, 2004 5:57 pm

Me. I saw this rifle on the shelf at the local Bass Pro Shop when I was out to buy some 17HMR ammo. It was a nice little singleshot with a heavy barrel that breaks open like a shotgun. It looked just about the size that would be good for totting through the heavy brush in the hills around my cabin back in Ohio. I really like the .17 and, at $149, I went ahead and picked it up thinking that I had a second .17HMR.

The rifle is a H&R/New England Firearms Sportster in .17 Mach II That's right .17 Mach II and it is not the same size as .17HMR <sigh>. A .17HMR will not chamber it in, no matter how hard you try.

The .17M2 is a brand new round that is essentially a .22LR necked down to .17 with a bit less velocity than the .17HMR, but more than a .22WMR. It is touted to have the same accuracy of the .17HMR and to fall in between it and the .22WMR for varmit shooting. That is what they say. I will have to wait until next week, when the six boxes that I ordered from Midway arrive, to find out. I looked all over the Baltimore area and was lucky if the stores had even heard of it. Bass Pro did get an earful about stocking rifles and not having the ammunition for them.

Reloaders do it all the time as a challenge.

But this is a rimfire. Can't reload those. With all the hype about these, they are a bit less the the HMR and are only accurate out to about 100 yds wheras the HMR is a true 200 yd rimfire.

AJ,

There's a solution and one that you may find interesting.

There is, in Australia, a .17 rifle that uses .22 long rifle, it's name escapes me but the chamber has a longish forcing cone in front of it and the .22 is forced down to .17 giving higher velocity, a longer bullet and more energy...and cheap to feed.

Just thought of it, called the 'Extruder' the inventor was selling .22 Chinese copies of the Brno with .17 barells fited to them. He would also convert other suitable rifles.

Bye the way it is possible to reload rimfire cases, not cost effective nor without risk when done on the kitchen table, but doable.

Could be worse! Could have fallen in love with a 5mm Remington rimfire! Ain't no ammo for these, a buddy has one and is in dire need of ammunition. I had heard they make a few million rounds of 5mm every once in a while, has given him some hope of shooting again.

I had feared originaly that the .17 HMR might be the same trap that the 5mm Remington was, got a nice rifle, nobody on the planet has ammunition! However looks as if the .17 HMR has taken off and ammo will be available forever.

Don't know about the .17 M2? No problem finding .17HMR ammo, but have only seen pictures of the .17M2 ammunition! I would buy ammo in some quanity if you find a deal on it.

No kidding! I never thought the .17 HMR would fly. But it seems prosperous, and I own a Henry singleshot in that caliber now.

Hopefully the .17M2 will take off in popularity too. Won't be the a dead end cartridge.

Goodluck, Stevie.
