Milsurp After Hours

Guess everybody in the gun nut community knows that Jim Zumbo stepped all over his male member recently in writing an online story that said that the military semiauto rifles gave hunting a bad name. He has since probably been sent to Siberia on a protracted Polar Bear hunt with a pocket knife. His blog attached to the Outdoorlife magazine site is now history.

My question is:

In GB or Australia, France, Germany, wherever else, if you went hunting with an AK or M15, or SKS and killed a .....deer.. pig... whatever , and got caught in the act, license or whatever permission otherwise assumed, which of the following would happen?

1. "Well done, mate." Supply your own local version of this.

2. Your game is confiscated.

3. Your game and rifle are confiscated.

4. Your game and rifle, and you are confiscated.

5. You are going to need a really good lawyer since this isn't really one of those things you just get a fine for.

In Australia only 'Class C' licence holders can legally have a semi-auto. These blokes are usually either professional shooters or farmers and shooting on their own or their employers property.

So it would probably be a 1.

A 5 only if you haven't got the appropriate licence.

I think the Aussie equivalent might be using an original Mosin-Nagant with milsurp rounds and bayonet fixed. We would frown on FMJ and bayonet but not pay attention to the rifle. In fact, most hunting in Australia is in the nature of pest destruction; spotlights and semi-autos were and are perfectly acceptable in this model.

In some conservation hunting/culling groups, military camo is frowned on as it would give non-shooters a potentially 'rambo wannabe' image that we don't want them to get. These activities could be scrutinised by the media and to them AR15s would be acceptable in Government employees hands but probably not in private enthusiasts hands, assuming they could get a license.

Saw the same thing, Vern. There is a lesson here somewhere. I'm too dumb to fathom it but think it has something to do with Nixon's domino theory applied to guns, Political Correctness among gun owners,lynch mob mentality, and circle the wagons boys you know how other countries are and it isn't happening here.

When I think of Zumbo I somehow keep remembering a line from a John Wayne movie that Ted Turner has shown about three times a week for the last fifteen years or so....."Never apologize. It's a sign of weakness."

Here in the Uk it would mean at least five year in jail unless your under 16 years old then you would be fine. You have to over 16 before you can be prosecuted for carrying a firearm.

All the guns you mentioned are illegal in the UK.

The next day Zumbo should have said that it was the drugs talking (even though there weren't any) and immediately checked into a rehab clinic. All would have been forgiven.

Just saw the Ted Nugent educates Jim Zumbo show. Well.. much of it.



Jim was all humble. Shot an AR at some targets...nice zebra stripe decorated rifle, not all black. Made a statement about how Ted had educated him and he was going to spend his life correcting his mistake and defend the ownership of the black rifles. Ted made a statement about how he should promote shooting sports and not defend such as the second amendment was not in need of defending just promoting, etc. Called Zumbo a blood brother now that he had been educated. Ted made a good point about how all types of gun ownership are related and that none should be allowed to be forsaken in order to keep others in a political trade off.

Funny to say, what I noticed most about the show, besides Zumbo being cowed, was how much hair was growing out of his ears. Really gross.

In Canada, the SKS would be fine. The AK and AR-15 are considered evil. As are most modern battle rifles. No hunting with any of 'em.
