D Company,1st prize winners of the Bayonet Fighting competition, December 1914. Kharoum.

My Great Uncle, Sydney Robert Cookson ( who I am named after, Duncan Sydney Cookson Andrews ) is on the left.

He was CSM of the 1st/7th Btn The Manchester Regiment and was killed on the Dardanelles on the 29th May 1915 aged 47 and is buried in REDOUBT CEMETERY, HELLES.

I have a few photographs taken by him going back to 1912.

ADDITION.

Here is a close up of the rifles. Perhaps that is a bit better?

A very interesting photo, the 'rifles' appear to be bayonet trainers based on the M-H.

Why do you think the CSM's shorts are the same color as his jacket but the troops seem to be standing around in their drawers with those white shorts?

I love these old pics, especially when there is a story to go with them.

Thanks for posting them Duncan. Got anymore?

Joe

There are a few more

I will sort and post later Joe.

It's strange to see photographs of the man whose name you carry forward. Maybe one day I will go and have a talk with him in Helles - that would be nice I think.

One thing that does intrigue me a little though is that he was obviously quite a good photographer, looking at the pictures he took. My mum was also very interested when she was younger and I started my interest using her old box brownie.

I now sell my photographs (although not as many as I would like!!) and I can't help feeling that there are a couple of genes helping me along, one from each side of the family!!!

"...Why do you think the CSM's shorts are the same color as his jacket but the troops seem to be standing around in their drawers with those white shorts?..."

The C/Sgt is in standard uniform, while the troops are possibly in PT kit with their KD jackets (possibly in place of the 'waistcoat cardigan' usually worn after PT) and Topees added.

Just an idea.
