Getting rid of varnish

I bought an SMLE about two years ago that is a lovely example of it's type (No1 MkIII*) but the woodwork is covered in varnish and I want to return it to it's original oiled state. I think I have heard of Nitromors being used but do I use the liquid variety or the "putty" type.
Anybody been down this route?
