Milsurp After Hours

I've got my amber shellac to match my 91/30 stock. I cleaned the wood with mineral spirits and 0000 steelwool, and now I'm ready to apply the shellac. Part of the stock


(the buttstock) is in great shape, so I'm not going to shellac it. I have a 'star' stamped only in india ink, and I don't want to cover the star. Stamped over the star is the referbished cartouche of the slashed box that's pressed into the wood.





How do I apply the shellac smothly... do I use a foam brush, a rag. or a pad of 0000 steelwool? Do I shellac the inside of the stock?

Make a pad by laying wadding onto a sqare of lint free cloth and folding the cloth over wadding, such that there are no creases or wrinkles in the 'working' face.


Hold the pad firmly and beat the working surface (once)against a clean, flat surface (to flatten it).


Apply the shellac mix to the pad such that, when lightly pressed the surface shows liquid. Blot the pad against a flat, vertical, surface and begin applying.





An alternative is to use a camel hair 'mop', but to do this properly take some 36 - 48 hours to prepare the brush such that the hairs will not come out an ruin your work.

I've not tried the comsumption of shellac, per se`, and the last time I looked the 'Lac bug' species was doing well. I do know the shellac flacks are combined with denatured alcohol, and I'm personally aware of many 'tlipplers' whom have imbibbed that spirit. ;





My 91/30 was rearsoneled with shellac, and I do not know what finish was origionally on the 91/30. I have my name sake, MN M-44 that i'll be shellacing as well!

On a K-31 site somewhere they talked of adding BLO so to


make a smooth job out of it.


Got this from my friend in Switzerland. Will copy past his exact words. Hard to understand but it is the closes I've seen to someone knowing anything about it. Left it in his word cause it adds so much more originallity to it.





Straight from a Swiss Cabinet Maker: "Etienne"





for your k-31 to refinish it, you mean?the wood is mostly walnut,but the european specimen.those can be very different in color,(farbe).from very light to considerable dark.walnut is a very precious wood.normaly you haven't to coulor the stock. you can clean it by water with cleaning agent,then dry it ,but not fast, only by air. then only with fine sandpaper,grain 150 then with miture of linseed


oil and a kind of varnish, but the exactly name i dont now.it is "schellackmattierung" (shellac matt finish)


this is a old varnish for restauring old furniture. maybe you can ask a cabinetmaker. this varnish compars with spirit. this combination gives to the wood a nice honey color.this mixture drys very slowly,about two days!you will see.


when it is dry,you sanded the wood a little bit and get a second time the mixture. but sand not to much, not that the stamps go away!!

For the mixture you add shellac and linseed oil,mix it,and then you can add this spirit, only so much, that is then not to flowful?(flüssig).you can get

Got answer: 60% linseed oil and 40% shellac matt. But it ain't that important as you can mix it to your liking.
