What should the wood finish be for my K98k? At the moment it is a poor quality varnish which I think is recent because it is so bright.

I was thinking of removing it, cleaning and un-dinging the wood then oiling it with linseed but I would like originality if possible so what should it be please?

Along with the numbers on the stock, the shellac indicates a Russian capture 98k. Is thier an "X" on the receiver? Some on other forums strip off the shellac while others leave it . Mine is in good shape so I left it on.
Dave
No X to be seen!

Can't find any Russian stampings on this.
The finish is, or appears to be varnish and I would like to take it back to it's original finish.

Typical russian capture K98k, remove the varnish with denaturated alcohol and reoil the stock.

Chris,
I can't find a Dutch translation for "denatured alcohol".
What's the German translation for it
I need that stuff for removing the varnish on my SVT40.
But.....before I start I need to know what to buy.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Martin
Perhaps this is it Martin

Babel fish led me to this. Could this be denatured alchol used in a Dutch sentence? "gedenatureerde alcohol"? Have no idea what this says..LOL
THATS EASY FOR YOU TO SAY..................

This is from a site about taking care of horses.
Here's the translation.
What do I need to clean the hoof?
Use denatured alcohol, no acetone.
TIP: For an optimal result, use a hairdryer or a paint stripper to be sure that there is no more moisture in the tubuli on the inside of the hoof and everything is completely dry.
I think I know what to buy and where to get it.
Thanks Robert
Met vriendelijke groet,
Martin

Martin, I used the words, our american collector fellows use.
Ich habe ganz normalen, vergällten Alkohol benutzt, technisches Ethanol.
Du kannst auch unvergällten Alkohol nehmen, denn er ist das Lösungsmittel für den verwendeten Schellack!
But the varnish is the original finnish on russian/soviet rifle stocks, my never rearsenaled 1941 Tula SVT has a varnished stock.
