Got in in the mail today, looked real good.

But than I took out the bolt and looked down a as "shiney" advertised barrel, hm, looks more like a dark hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next thing ws the muzzel check, FAILED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Almost 1 and a half inch of the rifling is gone, cleaned to death.

Finaly I checked headsapce, it swallowed a field reject without ANY resistance.

Too bad, but it will go back to the dealer next week, seems like my auction luck is all used up, will stick with the guns I have here and blast away.

The claw mout was added later, not originaly by BSA.

Early mag, nice sigle stage trigger, bolt moves smoth as silk.

I'm almost tempted to ask how much you want for it. I'm sure I can source a barrel somewhere, and I've been looking for a sporter that will take a scope

Sorry, two other questions. 1, whats a muzzle check? I guess I may just know it as something else. 2, considering the age, is the rifling metford, in which case that probably will look like a black hole. My Metford looks shagged, but then I'm told they looked like that to start with.

A replacement barrel is no big deal.

One important thing however, how does the safety engage? Is it easy to operate?

Should engage with little or no resistance at full cock.

you could counter-bore the muzzle and headspace is no problem to correct if it is within the range of over size bolt heads.

Replacing the barrel will cost a good amount of money, which I am not willing to spend.

First problem would be getting a replacement barrel in Germany, nearly impossible.

Next to find a gunsmith, who can work with Enfields, next impossible thing in Germany(they only can do Mausers). Plus reproofing.

All in all one would have hundrets of Euros burried in that rifle and it wil be worth nothing.

And I am no hunter, just technical interested in Enfields.

The safey is also smooth as silk, as expected.

If somebody is interestet, I can provide the contact date to the dealer, the rifle will go back to on monday.

The barrel has 5 grooves, and is the same lenght a on a SMLE.

No Metford rifling, its Enfield profile.

I check the muzzel normaly by slugging, but in this case the lead ball fell into the muzzel without resitance.

Than I dropped a Sierra Prohunter .311" 180grn Bulled base ahead into the muzzle, is went in by gravity so that only the lead tip was showing.

Sorry there Chris, I tend to forget that for me, changing a barrel only means going to the backyard to the barrel vyce, and all that I ever change these days are Lee-Enfields.

The safety being smooth indicates low wear as many of those safeties are so worn that the cocking piece has to be pulled back slightly so that they can be engaged.

If it would be possbile for me, to get a licence to work on my own guns, I would have kept it for sure!

But since this is not possible one has to go to the gunsmith

And finding a gunsmith willing and able to work on an Enfeild ist nearly hopeless in Germany. I have senn many Enfields, some german gunsmith's did work on, NO WAY I 'll let them have one of mine!!!!!!!!

Hi Chris, its a shame the barrels wanked out on that piece, i have one similar, its official title is, BSA Lee Enfield No.2 Pattern Sporting Rifle. Unfortunately mine has had the bolt replaced at some time in the past!

Hence no safety and no spoon handle.

I will do a seperate post with more pics.

I will keep looking for a classic hunting rifle, not for hunting(no licence) but for looking at AND shooting

Enfields are not that much liked by german hunters, maybe this will give me a chance.
