Lyman Aperture Sight

Post by DuncaninFrance » Wed Sep 26, 2007 3:43 pm

I just fetched my Mauser back from the gunsmiths in Bordeaux where I had a Lyman Aperture Back Sight fitted. I may be able to hit something now! Zeroing on Sunday, pics will follow.

Looks trick Duncan.

Lucky you, having a range that is open.

Some moron has closed ours.

I just saw on your Martini post. Is that forever or just till you improve something?

If the worst comes to the worst you will have to ship me your rifles and I will shoot them for you and post reports. Anything for a friend

Duncan I'm touched, truly I am. What a friend. I am however not quite touched enough to take you up on it just yet.

Don't know about the permanancy of it yet, only going by the rumours no real facts as yet.

The problem is when it was originally (1897 ?) built it was 3 miles out of town but now we are between the airport and the racecourse.

Currently Firearms Registry (who control all ranges), local council and the Committee for the Shooting complex (no single club has control of the range) are in discusssion.

Yes we do have some interesting local rules - a cease fire is called if a plane is taking off or landing for instance.

RANGE REPORT - ISH!

Post by DuncaninFrance » Sun Sep 30, 2007 12:37 pm

I bore sighted it in the garden at 50 mtrs then went to the range today.

At 50 mtrs it was shooting about 12" high but straight.

I moved the target back to the 150 mtr point ( max for our range ) and the first 3 rounds were high.

I adjusted the rear sight as per the instructions but I can' get it low enough because the cross piece that carries the aperture site is restricted by the top of the bolt housing.

SO..........the only solution is to raise the foresight.

Can you get higher foresights or do I have to remove the original and drill/tap & mount a now one?

No pics because I forgot my camera - must be me age

Thats a nice sight Duncan but I would of fitted a set of mojos the rear appeture comes with a matching front sight. You dont have to get a gunsmith to fit them and you can remove and restore the rifle back to the original in about 30 minutes.

And the mojos are cheaper.

The danish Schulz&Larsen competition Mauser used a similar rearsight, but had a front globe sight fitted.

Maybe you can get a Parker Hale Matchmaker tunnel to install?

For the swedish Mausers some Globes exist, that fit into the original Mauser-dovetail.
