Is 50 years old, not a bad run for an MG that,s still in use worldwide.

Video of the British GPMG version here...

If I'm not mistaken, the MAG 58 is the same thing as the M240 in the US military now. From what I read the M240 has been taking over for the M60 in the Army in recent years.

However, the old M60 is still a pretty good machine gun. They work in some pretty tough environments with no significant problems. The advantage the M240 seems to have is that it averages significantly more rounds between stopages that can be cleared in a minute or two. Take a look at this late model M60E4.

I remember I had an ex RM in my platoon who was a gimpy man. When shown the 600 mtr target for the gun pairs match and told of the run down he said to the instructor " I don't go that far for me f*****g ollidays mate"!

Hot gun

That gun must have been mighty hot after that burst. I would love to fire a belt or two through a machine gun but I doubt I ever will. Not in the UK anyway.

Regards

Peter.

As a kid with the ACF, we used to have weekend camps at the (then) Guards Training Depot at Pirbright.

It was always possible to tell when the recruits had had their first session with the GPMG, there was always at least one wearing a plaster brace over a damaged nose.

It appears that it was a standard joke amongst the instructors to try to get the recruits to correct the aim while the gun was firing from the tripod*, and there was always one who tried to use the sights - result, recruit's fist hits himself in the nose, at speed.

Now that is a great machine gun.
I wouldn't trade this one for another.
Some pictures of Dutch MAG's at the range.
