I tried out some Brass 12g cases today. I loaded them with 3gms of 3F Black Powder and 30gm of No: 7 shot. Primer was a Winchester Large Pistol.

The photographs are of a friend, Alain, whose gun it was - A Baïkal 'Coach Gun'. All 5 fired without any problem.

We now have to check some more loads on a pattern plate to see what we are getting. If it looks OK then it's off to Bordeaux to do some BP Clay shooting!!

What manufacture of powder and what were you using to keep the fouling soft?

The powder is VECTAN 'Chasse' (Hunting) which is 3F.

I also use it in my Remington 1858 with a lubricated felt wad over the powder.

After each 6 shots of the Remington I wipe the outer down and pull the barrel through once with a patch soaked in car screenwash fluid.

With shotguns, I pull them through after I have shot them with a stocking or one leg of a pair of tights. The nylon is abrasive enough to remove most of the fouling and the screenwash does the rest. Once I get home I use hot soap and water as normal.

Points to note:- I don't use stockings/tights unless they are given to me after laddering etc by my wife or my mother. Any discovered in the back of the car are immediately disposed of elsewhere as the colour is a dead giveaway
