In many years of gunshow attendance I have picked up some cheap SMLE's and one such example was pretty dreadful. $50.00 and it was mine to go alongside a few others that were "sporterized".

Far to gone to return to issue, and of little value it will make for a perfect platform for a conversion to something interesting.

I have a 7.62x39 chamber insert on the way and plan to convert this one to use AK mags, scout style scope via a t/c contender base.

The magazine sits a bit under the bolt so that needs to be fitted with a spacer and a lever to lock and release it inline with the feed ramp and allow a round to be stripped from the magazine.

Another project....... anyone have a few spare roundtuits?

How do you find those scout scopes, how easy is it to get eye relief with it being halfway down the barrel?

Its actually a pistol scope and works quite well. The eye relief for a pistol is almost ideal for scout applications and I have a couple others set up the same way...

Both m 95 mausers, one is a 250 Savage and the other still in the wood stock is in the original 7x57.

All use TC Contender scope bases.

Nice rifles, its a fine round the 7x57.

The classic Highland red deer calibre. I've dropped few with it myself in my time, although my stalking round of choice is .303".

One of the reasons of the 7x57 being so popular for the reds was fashion, the English royal family being German they had a fondness for things Mauser. Notwithstanding that it is a good cartridge.

What calibre is the Rolling block in?

It's a 1871 NY Militia action that is in 357max. Cool lil carbine.
