Milsurp After Hours

Today was the first chance for a long range shoot this year,

unfortunately the extremely high winds precluded the use of

the electronic falling targets and we had to make do with stick in`s.

Not having butts to mark the targets i was limited to 100m with my 25X spotting scope.

Wind speed can be judged by the horizontal range flags.

Whitfell is the range between Peatfell and Blackbeck ranges, both of which were being used by the military.

It was hard shooting in these conditions but we did our duty today.

...since Woftam amd me shot there. I remember it well. It was a cold day but the bacon butties helped to keep us warm. Doesn't time fly.

I can't seem to find a picture of a really lovely looking rifle I shot on that day, I think it was French, may have started with M ?? Perhaps Adam can help me out when he's back ?

Really miss the UK and the bit of a look at Europe that I had. On the bright side the wife has been musing about getting an Irish (ROI) passport - she's apparently eligible on ancestry grounds. Once she has it she would then have to use it and a year in 'the south' sounds very appealing. However study and family commitments mean it would be a long range plan, 3 - 4 years at best.

Yep blame me, it was all my fault. Getting the weather so cold took a bit of doing but I managed to pull it off. Quiet talented really.

That rifle, I use the term loosely, was a French Mas. A very interesting design, probably the pinnacle of bolt action battle rifles being designed around all the best elements of successful battle rifles.

Unfortunately the outcome was so ugly that it saw limited service, the very sight of it brought recruiting to the French army to an all time low and desertion was on a level never seen since the retreat from Moscow.

The reason you couldn't remember its name Graeme is that most people purge its memory from their persons in the interest of their well being and sanity, it is a visual abomination and an affront to nature.

Pictures are rare as no self respecting paper or other medium can bear to carry its alien lines and shapes for long, they just disappear into space to trouble the universe for ever more.

Its other claims to fame are that it is responsible for global warming, famine, war and pestilence.

Other than that they are canny rifles.

I like em - Bolt or Semi-Auto but they do remind me of the LoneStar toy rifles of the 50's

I like them too Duncan, but not to look at.

Consequences - nausea, fits, suppurating ulcers and untimely death.

Being blind is the only way they can be used.

Mind you most of the buggers I shoot with, shoot as though they are blind so that explains why we have them at the range occasionally.
