Kind of a stretch for a War Machine but here goes!

The little twin-boom aircraft in the photo is a Stearman-Hammond Y1S.

Only about 11 were built with a couple being bought by the Dutch to train pilots on tri-cycle type gear.

A variant was also tested by the Navy as a radio controlled drone.

The type came about as a result of competition to design a cheap safe civil aircraft but it was too expensive.$7000.00 rather than $700.00!

The photo above was taken at a Black Hill Airport Airshow about 1939 near Spearfish,S.D. by my Dad who was in the Cavalry at the time.

I just thought it was neat that such a rare aircraft even then was at a Podunk Airfield in the middle of No-Where,South Dakota!

There is video on the web of a 10 year old boy flying one so maybe it was safe :?:

That's one of the KLM planes.I wish my photo was clear enuff to read a tail number but it's not.I'd be interested to know who flew it in to Spearfish.
