Guisan, at present I have a 69/71, a 78 and a couple of 81's. I converted the two 81's to centerfire. I have to admit that they are my favorite shooters.

Well that's a nice collection to start with, it's indeed better to leave the older rifles in their original condition.

The two bottom pictures are my favorite 81. It was used by an artillery school and made by the company that later became SIG.

Thanks for the education, what cartridge did the Cadet rifle use?

Well the cadet rifles were able to shoot the normal cartridges but common was the use of a cartridge with less powder.
The same goes also for the later M1897 cadet straight pull, that one has a rear sight with two scales, one for normal cartridges and the other for the special cadet cartridges.
LoLo I think that your rifle was once part of the study collection of the artillery school at Fontainebleau in France.
SIG Schweizerische Industrie-Gesellschaft (SIG Société Industrielle Suisse) (SIG Swiss Industrial Company) (SIG Società Industriale Svizzera) (SIG Sociedad Industrial Suiza), in N e u h a u s e n a m R h e i n f a l l is the same company in several languages and at first the guns they made were marked in French, they changed that later to German.
See for more about SIG here....

Thanks for that info Guisan. I spent a little while with the links and mostly looking at Fontainebleau, France. I'd like a chance to wonder around that town for a week or two someday.
The Vetterli cadet rifle is the most apealing to me. I remember seeing what looked like one converted to a nice target rifle once.
