But mine, unlike Dromia's, has the bolt release in the war expedient place on the track near the receiver opening. Mine had some problems keeping the bolt head in the track until I replaced the bolt head and smoothed out the track edges to make the function more reliable. Mine also has a bolt all in white and not with matching numbers. The date of rifle manufacture shows 1943 as the year produced.
Not a lot to like about the one I own relative to my other better made Enfields.

What you have Robert is a No 4 MK1*, the final production version.
The Savage No 4 MK1s were the early production versions with only around 40,000 being made during 1941-2 from a total Savage production of 1.2 million No 4s.
The "C" in the serial number being for Chicopee Falls.

Yes. Wish mine had been made before the cost cutting measures were put in place. But still want it for my collection in as an example of what most of the the Savage models were like.
Thanks for the added comment about the asterisk being added to the later ones like mine. I should have made note of the designation being altered along with the design.

mines in the 11C000 range. Just the boring old 2 groove barrel. Overall its in good condition as most in this country are.
Like most, except the very early ones, the MkI sight is of British origins, a later replacement. Had the chance to buy a Savage marked MkI sight but couldn't justify paying half the rifles price for it.
I'm in the opposite situation to you Niner, I need a MkI*.

Mines in the 7c range, came with the 300/600 yrd flip sight.
I use a target aperture when I shoot this rifle.
