Rust . . .

Tonight on that rather good BBC effort 'The Antiques Roadshow' there were shown a beautiful cased pair of duelling/target pistols by PARKER.
Sadly there was rust in evidence and the presenters, who offer all sorts of advice on antiques and their care, never mentioned the rust. I've noticed this on other episodes when firearms have been shown..

Public TV in the US has a show by the same name. Experts in antiques travel around to different cities in the US. People bring out their "treasures". Always interesting to see someone with something that looks like junk and the "expert" says, "At auction, this piece should bring..... are you ready? $12,000 to $15000!". And the owners just says "golleeeee! I never imagined!". Nobody ever says.."Quick man....direct me to the nut..mean collector..who would pay that!"

The programme seems to be an international franchise.
I'm always amazed when they point out that some paintng or other is worth an absolute fortune and I'm sitting thinking "It's aweful, I wouldn't give that rubbish house-room".
Personally, I blame AR for the hike in the price of collectables, the 'hard-of-thinking' now work on the principal "It's more than three weeks old, it must be worth a fortune"
