Milsurp After Hours

Been to Germany last weekend and found a relatively rare Mosin Nagant.

It's one with a lot of history attached to it.

I asked the dealer to put it on layaway and and promised him to call this week.

It's a Mosin Nagant produced by New England Westinghouse and captured by the Germans in WW I.

The Finnish Army owned it too.

A lot of history attached to it.

I think I will say yes to the dealer and pick it up myself in a couple of months.

I've got a NEW that has the SA mark and the original stock. But mine doesn't have the Finn D for the ammo proof and it never was a German capture.

That mark next to the German mark on the stock, Not a Britsh contract mark but still an early mark. http://62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinMarks01.htm\ But the stock looks like it is the original..... I'd think.

Is this one you can fire or is it going into the collection only list?

No chance, I informed the boarder guards already, no Mosin will leave Germany without my permission

But teh Stock seems to be not of NEW manufacture, wrong stockstamp, has to be "angliskii zakas" on the left side, stock bolt in line with the finger grooves, american wallnut.

Looks like it might be walnut to me..

At what juncture would the German property mark have been added? Could it have been a capture during WWI ? If that were the case then it would suggest to me that it could be original. And the Finns did recieve Russian weapons from various sources including Germany after WWI and as WWII was getting started.... I think. The question after that would be how the rifle ended up in Germany. The Deutsches Reich mark would have ended with Hitler, wouldn't it, although it would be the proper German term for Germany from 1871?

You are right that there is no British contract mark in the photos though. But Martin can exam it closer and in detail some time after he gets it.

You are right about the stock cartouche.

The only possibility is that the cartouche is this rare NEW one.

I called the seller today to check it again .

I'll call him tomorrow to get the answer.

I'll still buy it, even if the stock isn't original.

The price will drop dramatically if the stock isn't of NEW manufacture.

Just too much history attached to this rifle.

A NEW stock is pretty easy to spot, recoil bolt in the middle of the finger groove(only other walnut stock with thet feature are the finn made ones from german wallnut in WW2, all have AV3 plus number Stamp on the right side). Remington made stoks have teh bolt ofsset like teh russian stocks.

There are also several typical NEW stamps on the stock, look for letters with the arrow.

The finns mixed the parts pretty good, all original rifles are hard to find.

I may have another early M91 on the way, bolt does not match but everything else

Well, I got my answer.

It's a New England Westinghouse alright, but the stock is a 1905 Tula.

I told him I'm still interested, but the price had to drop €100,-.

He said he had to think about it.

He will keep the rifle on layaway for me until I definitely say no.

I'll call him back at the end of the week.
