Latest LEGO SET - wtf!!!

Post by andrew375 » Tue Dec 02, 2008 4:15 am

Lego. Concentration Camp, 1996

Set of 7 boxes of LEGO bricks, different sizes

In the upper-left corner of each box we find the following statement: "This work by Zbigniew Libera has been sponsored by Lego" - as the project was made possible thanks to the bricks presented by the polish department of the Danish company. Upon its presentation in Denmark, LEGO headquarters has launched legal complaints against the artist, however as a result of a fierce press campaign it has decided to drop the lawsuit. The controversies concerning Libera's LEGO also appeared in Poland, yet those where of a somewhat different character. As a result the artist has refused to exhibit in the Polish pavilion at the Venetian Biennale. In the meantime the work has become an icon and - in various versions - was exhibited in galleries and museum collections across the globe. One of sets was purchased by the Jewish Museum in New York

Must be a shortage of artists in Poland

How does a guy with the unlikely name of Zbigniew Libera get taken seriously for a Lego set construction? After one reflection on the shock value it is over. Reminds me of the kid that mooned the graduation ceremony from the balcony. And he wasn't considered an artist. He was just expelled.

Contemporary art only exists if if you accept and understand its post modern context.

I'm surprised that Lego tried for a lawsuit as they got into fankle over IP. They then took a rather enlightened approach of open sourcing design when the patent on the actual bricks ran out.

Many of the current Lego sets have been designed for them FoC by keen unrewarded enthusiasts.

There are over 50,000 Lego videos on you tube.

The Serious Play division of Lego works with big multinationals on management development. The premise being the complexity begets complexity, but underlying that complexity there is an inherent order. Reveal that and problem solving is easy

Is the brick a toy or a tool?

Are we smarter than me?

Those colourful bricks are the key to solving all the worlds problems, serious business believes that.

Now that is post modern.

Personally I just think talking to each other is all thats needed, but then I'm not a post modern person, I'm just living in a post modern world.

I take your points Adam but on mature consideration I have come up with the assumption that it is all a load of BOLLOCKS and agree with your final observation
