For Birthdays and Christmas I buy a selection of beers for my wife, Elaine, who has always been a lover of beer rather than spirits.

Here we have, from left to right:-

Green King IPA (India Pale Ale), 3.6% alc/vol.

Originally brewed to export to members of the British Raj in India it had an unusually large quantity of hops in the brewing process as hops act as a preservative and helped to keep the beer in good condition during the sea journey to idea.

John Smiths Extra Smooth, 4% alc/vol.

A modern version of John Smiths bitter that was brewed at Tadcaster. It may still be for all I know although I preferred Saml Smiths Yorkshire Bitter from a rival Tadcaster Brewery.

Boddingtons Pub Ale, 4.7% alc/vol.

Brewed at the Strangeways Brewery, Manchester since 1778 it’s as near as you will get to Boddies Draught Ale in a pub.

La Fin Du Monde, 9% alc/vol.

Triple fermentation beer brewed in Québec, Canada by La Brasserie Unibroue, bottled with its lees so should have a lot of taste.

Old Speckled Hen, 5.2% alc/vol.

Brewed by Moreland, Bur St Edmunds, Suffolk. It was first brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory and was named after an old MG car used as a factory runaround. ‘The Owld Speckled Un’.

Some more to come later

Santa didn't forget me in the beer sample gift department

Here is part 2............

Three bottles from the same brewery in Belgium – Abbaye de Leffe

http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f392/ ... FE-WEB.jpg[/pic]

From left to right:-

Leffe Ruby, 5% alv/vol.

A bièr blond brewed with red fruits and Asiatic spices.

Leffe 9º. 9% alc/vol.

A bièr blond for drinking as an aperitif or with good strong cheese.

Leffe Triple. 8.5% alc/vol.

Triple fermentation and bottled on it’s lees to give maximum taste.

And for Christmas Dinner tonight we are having roast leg of New Zealand lamb, roast potatoes, veg and a bottle of 2005 Cuvée Prestige Premier Côtes de Blaye red from Chateau Cap St Martin and then some Late Bottled Vintage Port to go with the cheese!!

Duncan,

Looks like you still need an introduction to the real Belgian trappist ales - Leffe is an Inbev product, and just a shadow of the real thing....

Better start looking out for Chimay Bleue or Rochefort 10, which are authentic trappist ales, and MUCH better! I know that each time I go to Bisley, I need to take along quite a bit of this nectar in order to keep some people happy!

I know there are lots out there and our local E Leclerc sell quite a good selection but you can ship a few my way if you like - just to get me started

Hmmmm.... Maybe, if you're very nice to me, I'll bring some along next time I'm going to Vinexpo. That is, if I don't meet a dry spell somewhere along the way!

I should be - My main supplier is there and doing a tasting, so I am morally obliged to go there...

Belgmart, you drink so much beer you have your own distributor and you are "morally obliged to go there"?

Well if you are let me know and perhaps we can meet up. I have a friend in the gun club who is a winemaker and he sells quite a lot of his product in Belgium.
