"T" coded Longbranch's ?

I was at the range today, and an acquaintance was there with a few Enfields.

One is for sale - though he wants quite a bit for it.

Its dated 1950 and its marked Longbranch and had a "T" on the left receiver - which he states made it a sniper variant. I can't tell if its a bubba job or not.

Someone ground off the rear battle sight and added a large - clunky - wooden cheek piece. It has holes tapped on the side of the receiver.

Its got most of its blue (though its a little thin) and a very good looking bore. The cheek peice makes it kind of unique and the rest of the stock looks unmolested.

No optics with it.

It grouped well (2x2) with the South African .303 he was shooting.

Insight? Thoughts on a fair price?

Take care,

David

David,

Personally, I would pass on it if he is asking a higher price for the "T". The ex-Russian MN91/30 sniper rifles are just MN 91/30's without the optics and they still have all of the rest of the kit unmolested and sell for regular 91/30 prices.

That is my take. Our British contingent will probably have a more authoritative say on the matter.

Hi all,

I paid a little over the top for mine, but not by much. The bore is good and the wood is new beech, I am currently having the Bech replaced with walnut and porper Military bedding down and the new beech wood was not fitted correctly. When it's al done it should be a fine accurate rifle;

Oh not all No4T's were issued with scopes it seems;)

Does that help?

Best Regards. KP

Kevin:

Yep, that seems right - though the one I saw has seen some more handling than yours.

So that cheek piece is part of the package? Shows what I know. :lol:;

The scope mount and optics are missing. I guess the rear sight was pulled for the scope?

So - dollars, Euro's, pound-sterling, what's a low-ish fair price for a Mark 4T?

Take care,

David

Hi drhiller,

Well I paid £375 for mine, which as I say is possibly a little high. I just looked through Gunmart and a normal No4 can be had for about £165 upwards, but I cannot of course see condition in an advert! However I was pleased with the bore condition and it doesn't shoot too badly at all, trouble was as it got hot the group walked up the target which is why I looked at the fore end and the way it was fitted. It doesn't have the cheeck piece on it at present as I replaced the Savage Birch butt with a new Walnut one, it was when I took it in for the bedding to be looked at that the man suggested that it should be fitted with walnut wood up front as well to help with the restoration.

It had been re-parked/blacked when I got it as apparently it was in real poor shape from storage in some sub/tropical place which is why it was fitted with new wood the original stuff was rotten; Oh I paid another £25 for the field patt sling that's on it. One day when I am rich I may try to get a scope and mount, however for now I will shoot it as is. Yes the battle sight ring was ground off to clear the scope. Acording to an armourers information sheet I have here the Wooden cheek piece was fitted to suit the individual user so there is no correct position for this and it's possible to have more than one set of holes in the top of the butt, if done by an armourer properly the surplus holes are filled with a dowl.

Here is the first group I shot with it, it's made up of several types of different surplus ammo, the foresight was way too low so I had to get a higher one. Which is why the group is up of the target:_

http://pic3.picturetrail.com/VOL14/1344 ...

That's 30 rounds there!

http://pic3.picturetrail.com/VOL14/1344 ...

Another try after changing the foresight blade to a higher one. Again another 30 shot group of normal milsurp MkV11 for comparision. I believe that the black is about 9" in diameter to give you an idea of scale the Bull is 2" as it's a 200 Yd NRA Std target.

Now with the bedding sorted (hopefully get it back soon) I can sort out some decent ammo for it and see how it really shoots;)

Best Regards. KP

David,

any chance of some pictures, the date seems a bit late for a Long Branch 4T conversion.

Dromia:

I'll bring my camera next time I go to the range.

E-mailed him this morning to confirm my interest and request more details. He replied that it was a Canadian sniper rifle and that they were in production until 1955. Does this help?

Too many versions of these things, damnit!

Take care,

David

Not only that, there were perhaps three different versions of the Canadian (T) rifle!

Feed,

Good luck with that JC---I hope it shoots well enough to justify the trouble.

After it arrives, are you going to shoot that match over you-know-where?

It's not moving much, for an international type shoot---your's was much better.
