Milsurp After Hours

I have recently aquired a converted Lithgow. I have pictures located

I have little or limited knowledge regarding old converted military style weapons and am just trying to figure this fella out.

Thanks for pointing that out and 'fixing it'. I mean no ill will, just had a rough time over there trying to get some very basic information. Anyhow, I did get a bit more history on this fella and posted on that page. I would like to know if the scope mount located <!--EZCODE LINK START--><a href="http://HERE" target="top">www.atigunstocks.com/installation/enfie ... <!--EZCODE LINK END--> would fit this rifle.





If there are any of these sporters out there, what are you all using to mount scopes???

welcome to the forum, hope you like it here and develop your taste in Enfields the best bolt action battle rifle ever made, I know that some people here will disagree and twitter on about mausers and such like but they "know" nothing. ; ; ; ;





I see from your site that you had the markings read and correctly identified as an Australian No 1 Mk111*.





All I would add is that you have a standard Parker Hale conversion around the reciever, looks like the deluxe model from the pictures.





These are first rate conversions that are robust and accurate rifles by a classic British rifle company. I have a Parker Hale conversion on the No 4 action that I am developing a taste for shooting "Running Deer" with.

Generally speaking most Milsurp people don't have any truck with the sporterisation of military rifles as it destroys their historic value and in general I subscribe to this view. However this is the real world and shite happens.





When these were converted the world was awash with Enfileds and you couldn't give them away, these conversions are well done and gave many Enfield actions a new lease of life.





To me they are a legitimate part of the Enfield story and an Enfield collection, although if anyone tried to sporterise or chop an Enfield nowadays I'd be up in arms with the rest of them.

Nice rifle,some of these conversions even made their way to Aust. Talk about coals to Newcastle!! I see you have a trigger lock on the rifle in some pics. With a little ingenuity the Lee-Enfield can be fired with the lock in place,especially those with cocking-piece safety catches, but even the usual catch can be used as a rough thumb trigger.

It should be noted the ATI scope mounts (among most others) make use of the charger bridge for installation on a No1. The rifle in question has had the bridge removed. Therefore the vast majority of the mounts available wouldn't fit.





Unless PH made a mount specific to this rifle, the only other option would be to modify a side mount made for a rifle with a similarly rounded receiver side. That also involves drilling and tapping and possibly wood removal to try and make it work.


This would call for the services of a real gunsmith. Not one of those common gun store sell/service/repair types at a small bench behind the counter. OK for screws, springs, bore sighting etc, but not for this type of work.


If a good riflesmith knows what needs to be done, things could get pricey very quickly.

Hi All,





P-H did make side mount which required the left side wall of the reciever to be drilled and tapped, they also made one for the No1 rifle which fitted to the charger bridge and top of the reciever ring which also was a D&T job.
