Marking on Savage No.4MkI?

I recently acquired a Savage No.4MkI (not MkI*) that has a W inside a five pointed star (see following image) stamped on top of the receiver above the breach end of the barrel and I am curious to know the origin and meaning of the stamping.

The rifle has matching serial numbers stamped on the bolt handle, stock socket and forestock but it has undoubtably undergone FTR since it has a micrometer rear sight and the receiver and barrel have been painted black. The US Property stamp is intact and there is no evidence of a recent import mark.

I would appreciate any information that someone might share concerning this "W in a star" stamping.

Here's a recent discussion of this same mark. I use a link because I am too lazy to type.

Follow the thread and you will see that "Pongo" who lives in the UK has seven rifles with this mark---I only have five.

PS Adam, I don't think it's the "cord worn" mark---the rifles I have it on, all 1950's FTRs, are damned near new.

The muzzle appears to be in good condition as is the 2 groove bore. The muzzle end of the barrel is also stamped:

NI .303" 2.22"

18.5 Tons

in two lines between the bayonet lug and the end of the muzzle.

The number 8 above 72 is stamped on the left side of the stock socket below the serial number and a crown over what appears to be G with a superimposed I stamped just to the right of the W in a star on the receiver ring.

There is no legible stampings on any of the exterior stock furniture except for HC above the serial number stamped on the bottom of the lower forestock just behind the stacking band.
