My mother and grandmother knew Charles Lightoller, Second Officer-and senior surviving officer-of theTitanic.
In 1940 at the age of 66 he took his boat, The Sundowner and crossed the Channel with a crew of 3-his eldest son and an 18 year old Sea Scout. They brought 130 men back.

That's an interesting story riptidenj. I found this link with a short biography mentioning what you are saying.

In 1960 I stayed for a while with an old army mate (well, not so old then) in London, his landlady was a Mrs Bunt and she had a framed certificate that honoured her late husband for his contribution to the evacuation. He was a Thames Tug Master and he took his river tug across the Channel a more than once, as I remember the reading of it.
He may have spent a lot of time ferrying troops out to larger vessels.

It's something that I've always remembered.
