It's a Mosin Nagant St. Petersburg cavalry school carbine.
Just some pictures I made very quickly.
Better pictures in a couple of days.

Here's some info I found on this carbine.
This carbine has some unique features. For use on horseback it got a sling swivel on the left side of the buttstock. The front band has a swivel on the left side too. Both bands are totally different to the normal bands used on the rifles Mosin-Nagant.
The bands were used to hold and fix a bayonet attached backwards to the muzzle. The same purpose has the permanently attached short metal bayonet scabbard on the right side of the rifle under the rear sight. This rear sight is pretty similar to the one used on the later built carbine Mosin-Nagant m/07. The short bolt handle is slightly bent to make carrying the carbine on horseback easier. The muzzle is stepped to make it possible to attach a bayonet. The rifle is matching on barrel, bolt and magazine.











I'm extremely happy that I found this carbine.

That's pretty different. Thanks for the photos. Do you think the bolt handle was just bent as an added step in manufacture or was it cast that way to start with?

I can't find much info on this carbine Robert.
All I know (for now) is that they were made out of cut back M91's, Dragoons and Kosak rifles.
I'll check my books and notes and get back asap on this subject.

This afternoon I took apart the rifle for some good cleaning.

Maybe it is one of the very rare St. Petersburg Cavalry School model rifles? From what I'm seeing of the standard, although relatively rare, 1907 carbines they seem to have straight bolt handles..maybe you have one of the really rare guns made before the 07.

We had a string on this back in 2006 but the photos were link attachments and have gone with the wind.

But one link to a statement by Karl Heinz Wrobel that is interesting is this one.

The 11 carbines you are talking about are called "Gendarmerie carbines".
Only 11 of these were designed by Jurlov in 1895 and manufactured in Sestroretsk using Izhevsk M91 Dragoon rifles.

The carbine I bought is a carbine that was used only on the St. Petersburg cavalry school (some sources say).
These were made out of M91 rifles.
Karl-Heinz Wrobel designates these carbines as "Carbine Mosin Nagant M91", other sources refer to them as "St. Petersburg Cavalry School Carbine".
Not much is known about these carbines, so I'll try to get as much info as I can, make some pictures and post it all in here.

A very interesting rifle Martin, i will be looking forward to more posts and photos on this one.
