HI guys

finally sorted myself out, so here with a quick question. I was talking with a gun dealer recently, and he mentioned he had been offered a whittaker special conversion of a No. 4, which he said had mauser style woodwork. has anyone got any photos of one of these beasties, or an explanation of how someone managed to get woodwork around the wrist on the action? and also, does anyone know anything about their performance on the range?

Nick, While I don't know of the 'whittaker special', Long Branch made a post-war No.4 without the butt-socket and a one piece stock.

I know nothing about this particular conversion, but at one time it was popular to rebuild No. 4 7.62 target rifles with a one piece stock. In Canada, some were done by a chap named Collins. Mine is typical: Robertson synthetic one piece stock, long Schultz and Larsen barrel, Canjar trigger, speedlock striker. These rifles were used into the 90s, but disappeared when service ball ammunition was no longer used in competition.

Whittaker converted a number of 4(T) rifles by grinding off the butt socket and then mounting them in a one-piece stock. It was an effort to produce an accurate rifle, but is mostly remembered for having destroyed a number of original 4(T)s! I know Fultons at Bisley say that they chuck them straight into the auctions, as they do not have much sale value in Uk at least.
