Milsurp After Hours

I picked up this 1899 Tula M91 on a tread last month. This one covers two holes in my Mosin collection. #1, A rifle made before 1900 and #2, A Spainish Civil War rifle.

How do you know it was in the Spanish Civil War? Is there some mark on it that would confirm this?

When exported from Spain they were marked with the country of manufactor.

Some, but not all will have the Spanish MP8 flaming bomb stamp on the stock.

Cool. I wasn't sure what that crest was. Looked like one of those Russian eagles to me, but I can see it's something else now.....

That mark is the old Russian eagle.

Some rifle were stamped very clear but not all.

Ok....so the flaming bomb had nothing to do with it.

Here is a pic of the MP8 flaming bomb stamp. If it is on the rifle it will most likely be stamped on the side of the buttstock. Not all stocks will have the stamp.

From what I have read, the Mosins purchased from Spain in the 1960's by Interarms had the "USSR" or "URRS" stamp placed there in the U.S., possibly to seperate them from the other obsolete firearms that Interarms was importing from Spain.
