I recently aquired a 9mm garden gun which had been sadly neglected for past 40 odd years ,the barrel was rusted and stock varnish all flaking off, after some work with wirewool the rust was not as bad as first thought and after putting a bronze brush through the barrel was surprised to see a clean and shine bore.
I started on the woodwork and the varnish just fell off and got another surprise as the wood was not a white hard wood stained but was infact walnut will post more as i do more as i am in act of oiling the stock

We've talked about "garden guns" on the chats. That's something I am looking forward to seeing as a restored example.

You can own one of the 9mm 'Garden Guns' in France as a Cat7 gun but the prices of new ones are just STUPID! Tatty Manu.Arm single shot bolt action - 187€ / £150 / $250 !

Do I leave the original finish or do I completly reblue?
Is there any of the original finish left on it?

Hi B R .
No there is very little of original finish left when I got it there was a lot of surface rust which I at first thought was pretty deep embedded into the barrel but was pleasantly surprised when i did an initial rust removal and found only a couple spots of pitting which was not bad tther resyt came off but it did reveal very little of original finish .

What would browning do to it....the surface color being that far gone? Not as difficult to do as bluing either. I've browned a muzzle loader project gun before and I liked the way it came out....but it was on bare steel that had not been blued or browned before.

I used the Larel Mountain Forge solution.
