Refinishing SVT-40 Stock

Hello all,
I have a 1941 SVT-40.
It's in great condition. Minor pitting on some areas of the metal but then again I didn't pay much for it at all
The stock has that typical SVT-40 lumpy plastic coating finish on it.
I would like to refinish it but have no idea how to go about this.
What I need is information on the best way to strip, colour and put a protective finish on it.
Any and all info would be appreciated.
