30.06 range day

This was another day out at the Diggle Ranges and today we were shooting the 500yd Military Comp on tin hats, 2 sighters and 20 to count.
We did the first butt detail and the wind was so strong and gusty we elected to take the targets to the butts in the range Mitsubishi pick up truck.
Some of the morning shooters took a while to get on target and one or two decided to call it a day due to the wind.

We then adjourned for the usual Bombay Bad Boy pot noodle and pot of tea then it was our turn, me with my Eddystone M17, dated 7-18 and Adam with his 03, both of us using Privi Partisan fmj.

I managed to get on the board after a couple of shots then off we went the wind buffeting myself and the rifle badly. I finished my 20 with a score of 62 which i was quite pleased with considering the conditions.

A two hour drive to go shooting? Now there is a case of really wanting to go shooting. Too bad there are no trees to knock off some of the wind.

Good to see Adam is still alive and kicking.

The next one in July is a 800yd military shoot, now which rifle should i take to that.

It might have to be the Schmidt Rubin again, or perhaps the M95 Steyr, or perhaps.....

I have nver shot at Diggle, but I have shot at Deer Hill range which is next door to Diggle between Slaithwaite and Meltham. It is a 500 yard range and the Northern Region HBSA used to run some shoots there. Our club chairman shoots F class rifle at Diggle alot at 1000 yards. He also goes to Blair Atholl for the long range shoots and is a top shot in the F class world. He had his F Class .223 rifle at the range on Sunday. It is like a piece of Meccano built around a Savage action and weighs about 18 pounds. He uses 90 grain Berger bullets in a barrel with a 7 inch twist. If his bullet lands 1/4 inch from where it is suppposed to it is a disaster. If mine are somewhere in the black fairly near the middle, it is a success

When shooting military rifles, I like to wrap my thumb over the wrist of the stock, then place my cheekbone either on, or just behind my thumb. This gives me uniform head positioning. This causes no problem when shooting M1903 and other rifles, but with the M1917, the stock design smacks my face hard enough that my teeth hurt.

I see you shooting a M1903 also. Ray-Vin started making a copy of the PJ O'Hare micrometer several years ago that helps with adjustment of the rear sight slide up and down the rear sight leaf. It helps me some, but I still have trouble getting zeros.

A two hour drive to go shooting?

We regularly make the 76 mile, hour and 20 drive to RBGC. Pretty much have to make a day of it. It's a long trip but other than Ft. Benning there is not a comperable facility in Ga.

Hi Power has moved to the back burner as Bob and I spend most of our range time with handguns on the steel plate range and on shotgun hill blasting clay birds. I think we just got bored with punching holes in paper targets.

I am unable to do much of anything until my right shoulder recovers from rotater cup surgery. Soon as the Doc gives the OK we are off to try some of that redneck golf.
