US National Vintage Military match

Post by NuJudge » Sat Aug 06, 2011 6:32 pm

The match was held yesterday. The results are here:

The results they were showing yesterday had me with a score of 281 out of 300 points possible, but they revised it overnight and now show me as shooting a 285, which is what I remember. They do not have posted the make and model of the rifles used, but I used a Swiss K31.

All K31 shoot decently, this one shoots really well

Something happened regarding elevation. My sighting in several days before the match showed, with a 6 O'Clock hold, the rifle putting bullets from my handload in the X ring of the MR target (~13 inch bullseye) at 200 yards using a 200 meter rear sight setting. The match allowed up to 5 sighters before the shots for record, and the first one was about 2 inches above the Point of Aim. I did not think it would work, but for my second sighter I tried putting the rear sight setting on 300 meters, and it put a hole right at the top of the black. I put the rear sight back on the 200 meter setting, and did something I have no previous experience with: I used a Center of Mass hold. I only took 2 more sighters (both high 10's), then went for Record. IIRC, Prone Slow I shot all 10's and X's, except the last two, which were 9's.

I was really uncomfortable using a COM hold, but if it works, perhaps I should experiment with it further. I'm also buying a slightly shorter front sight, which should move the POI up about four-and-a-half inches.

I also am really uncomfortable with Open sights, preferring an Aperture rear sight, but if it works, I can put up with uncomfortable.
