That does look good. I am anticipating a glowing report on how well they work when shooting at targets.

Very well done Duncan.
I notice you've rounded off the ends rather than squared them like the originals, going to have any effect on grip under recoil do you think ?

The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it.

I really don't know G, I will let you know on Thursday! The profile is also thicker than the originals and so the actual grip on the gun seems to be firmer.Woftam wrote:Very well done Duncan.

Re: BIGGER HAND GRIPS FOR MY 1858 - THE PROCESS
Shot 36 rounds at the range yesterday and the gun was very stable and much easier to shoot.
The only thing I needed to do was to thin the front edge profiles a bit as the radius of the edge was too severe for comfort.
Targets below. I have just finished re shaping the grips and so will be polishing them over the weekend.
It is obvious that although it is a more comfortable gun to shoot now I still can't hit a barn door with it
I think I am going to trty and change the fore sight for a pin instead of the blade as I get so much distortion from it.

Re: BIGGER HAND GRIPS FOR MY 1858 - THE PROCESS
Well here we are. After removing more wood from both grips, mainly to reduce the radius on the leading edges which were rather uncomfortable after a full cylinder, I have finished them with CCL Gunstock Conditioning Oil and bluing the screw that holds them onto the frame.
I am more than happy with the final results, even if the fit is not 100% perfect on the back of the frame where it shows a little.
I was not at all convinced I could do the job to a good enough standard but I am pleasantly surprised.
( Next job already scheduled - shorten my Benelli stock by 8mm )

I think you did a great job on those grips Duncan.
They look fantastic to me.
Good shooting too.

Looks good. Well done. And if it makes the gun feel better in your hand all the better.
