Oak is not a good idea , its hard to work and the grain splits out easily and makes for big splinters . Take a trip to your local dealer and see if he has an old broken stock thats not much good other than a source for a bit of walnut .

We are talking French Oak which is quite tight grained and polishes up very well.
I am going to start with it and see where we get to.

Actually asking for a lump of old stock wood from a gunshop here would normally mean paying through the nose for a bit of firewood - HOWEVER, I will see what I can find. In this part of the world they are basically Yorkshire Folk with all the generosity kicked out of them

OK, here we go then
First the tools that I have borrowed or stolen to do the job with.

Vertical Sander & Jig Saw



Power File & Dremel (sort of!)


Profile Gauge & Digital Calipers. Metric Fixings.



The Wood!



First job is already done as the wood is cut to thickness. I now have to cut out stencils, stick them to the wood and mark out the outline of the grips for jig saw cutting out.

Ready to cut out now. Stencils are stuck to the wood with Photo Repositionable mounting spray!

I have to go to a gun shop in Bordeaux tomorrow so I am going to see if I can get my hands an old walnut stock

Wednesday 7th Dec.

This morning I cut out the new hand grip blanks using the fret saw. I tried to keep as close as possible to the templates. I then sanded the edges very carefully to clean them up and check the wood grain. The blanks are oversize but the correct shape and the back of the blanks (which will fit on the frame ) are flat.



In the afternoon I went to Bordeaux with my pal Alain to collect his Marlin which had been at the gun shop for a warranty repair. While we were there I asked if they had a gash stock that they would give me FOC for the new grips and look what I got! From a Beretta.......................



It is split where the wood meets the metal but I hope there will be enough wood to cut some new blanks!

The project is moving on then , dont forget you will need an infill at the bottom of the grips to take up the thickness of the frame or cut out the inside of the grips so they will end up flush together .
