Milsurp After Hours

Jim Whitey, the head gardener at the White House, was dismissed today after 28 years of loyal service to many US Presidents.
In an exclusive interview outside the back gate of the Presidential Residence,
Mr. Whitey, an elderly gentleman, proclaimed his innocence and strongly condemned his firing.

"It all happened so fast. I'm still in a daze" said the bewildered Whitey. "All I know is, I was getting ready to weed the rose bed outside the Oval Office window like I do every week.."

I yelled out to my assistants, 'Has anyone seen the spade and the hoe?'

And the next thing I knew, the Secret Service was escorting me off the property!

This is Vern's joke....but I'll make a stab at explaining it.


Here are some hints for the British and Aussie folks that don't follow the slang. This term of "spade" probably originated in the phrase " black as the ace of spades". Whites used it in a belittling way,although it was not their favorite term and was considered less offensive than some alternate possibilities. Uncle Toms also used it sometimes, to label someone with a darker complexion than themselves. In conundrum two, "hoe" is "whore" as spoken by someone who has difficulty pronouncing R sounds.

And...then there are the garden implements.
