A hundred years ago today this story was in the news. Hitler and General Ludendorff were released from prison in sentences in Bavaria to the joy of a mob. They had been convicted of attempting an armed overthrow of the government that failed. The heat under the pot on the stove had just been turned up and the path to WWII had gotten beyond a major fork in the road.

A hundred years ago today,. May 1924, the Senate passed the Veteran's Bonus bill over the President's veto. There was only one catch.
The World War Adjusted Compensation Act (43 Stat. 121), known as the Bonus Bill, created a benefit plan for World War I veterans as additional compensation for their military service. It credited service members with "adjusted service certificates" equal to $1.00 per day served in the United States and $1.25 per day served overseas, up to specified limits. The certificates, popularly known as "bonuses" because they supplemented the pay and benefits that service members had received during the war, earned interest and became payable to the veteran in 1945 or to a veteran's family if he died before then.
The pay two decades later in 1945 ...or if you die before then... became the part that caused the problem that would linger into the great Depression and a march on Washington demanding a need for early payment that was treated less than kindly.

How the bonus would work. Convoluted with a lot of nit picking calculations and in the end really a not particularly rich pay out in 20 years for an insurance policy. However, it would produce thousands of new government clerks. And if you wanted you could make a loan with the policy as collateral in a couple of years for a few dollars. https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn ... d-1/seq-1/
