Milsurp After Hours

I have just bought a 1941 dated Maltby No4 Mk1 at Bisley on Saturday. It has a two groove barrel numbered to the action and the forestock and bolt is matching numbers also. It has been used a bit, but, hey, there was a war on in 1941. The bore is bright and shiney. It has a Zamac butt plate that has seen some parade ground use by the marks on it. It has the round cocking piece and the stock is profiled for the non existant cut off plate. It has not been through any FTR process, at least it is not marked if it has. It looks a bit more worn in the pictures than it actually is. I put 30 rounds through it today at 200 yards. It shoots a little to the right for me but it didn't do too bad if I did my bit holding it straight. The rear sight slider has a bit of slop in it which didn't help but it shot OK. The magazine was a bit oily and greasy so I took the floorplate and spring out. There was some stands of a thick dry grass stuff in the bottom and some small spiky thorns. I noticed the thorns when one spiked my finger as I wiped out the magazine with a paper kitchen towel. I wonder where they came from?

That's a real old warhorse that looks as though it might have seen some real action.





I was talking to my dealer friend (who sold me the M-H) and he said that he'd sold ten rifles on Friday alone. Clearly a lot of money was changing hands during the meeting.





Perhaps a few more of us could arrange to meet up next year?

I've just looked at the pics and something is bothering me. I have a No4 Mk1, which bears the serial number LN102**. this was identified by krinko on another forum some time back as being a Maltby serial number, but it lacks any marks as to its manufacturer, particularly the ROFM on the reciever. on the left side of the wrist is a very faint RTF and 1945, stamped rather than the other form of marking I've seen for Faz (electro pencil?). it also bears a five groove barrel, but as I've said in another discussion, it appears to be a civilian burnished barrel that sneaked into military hands. is it a late war model, or one that got RTF'd after the war and lost its original markings in the process. as a postscript, it was on a ticket for about 30 years as a Stevens Savage. there are a couple of boxed S's on the woodwork, which I think might be the excuse.

KCLRPC, Sometime between '41 and '43 (I've no '42) the <!--EZCODE BOLD START--><strong>ROFM</strong><!--EZCODE BOLD END--> on the side wall was done away with. Instead a stylized <!--EZCODE BOLD START--><strong>M</strong><!--EZCODE BOLD END--> was stamped on the butt-socket.

I had the top handguard off again to have another look at the barrel. As well as the serial number stamped on the left side, there is BB33 stamped on the top of the barrel a couple of inches from the action. Anyone know what this means? There is also an upside down letter A stamped under the serial number on the butt socket.


Price? I paid £250 about $450USD. By US standards astronomical, but about the going rate in the UK. There was an Indian 2A1 at the same price, but I passed on that one.

Peter, The upside down A is likely a suffix for the S/N denoting a non-standard part, which on my '41 Maltby seems to be it's 2-groove barrel.

I have a '41 Maltby number "C16152", which is close to where yours is.


I also have an inverted "A" below the serial number on the buttsocket and my barrel is marked "BB 36" a couple of inches forward of the Nock's Form.


Maybe that's a barrel batch number?


"I tried to photograph these marks but my rifle has been painted and doesn't want to show the "A"."
