1931 No.2 MkI Enfield revolver ... (PICS)

Will be a little while before I receive it, but I have just acquired what appears to be a very nice .380 Enfield No. 2 MkI revolver, still with the checkered walnut grip panels this pattern was equipped with in the first few years of manufacture (starting in 1927.) The finish looks perfect. Do you think the finish is original? Of course it might have been kept in a dresser draw for most of the last seventy odd years.

I'm not sure about the finish, nor did the seller know. It may have been FTR'd during its service life (or perhaps refinished at some other time) - will hopefully be able to tell when it arrives.

I have a 1932 Enfield pistol in the same condition as yours. I beleive that mine was issued to some paymaster who brought it out once a month for Pay Parade as the paymaster was required to have a loaded pistol on the desk/table as he hands out the money. When I was in the QOCHOC back in about 1960 the pay officer had an Inglis HP on the table at Pay Parade. I think that the paymasters who had the pistols probably had them issued to the paymaster unit till they were finaly turned in as obslete probably back in the 1960s and possibly latter as they were never upgraded to the double action only setup. This revolver arrived yesterday ... and is every bit as nice as the above photographs would indicate. Now that I have it in hand, I am confident that the finish is original - "military quality" bluing, as would be expected on an early Enfield No. 2 revolver, rather than the "blackening" of later production (and refurbished revolvers).

Marked "2 SHROP" on the rear bottom of the gripframe, which I believe denotes the 2nd Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry ... http://regiments.org/regiments/uk/inf/053KSLI.htm

I have a rather unusual Pistol No 2 Mk 1 in that it is a 1942 marked, walnut grips with the channels across each side (which would match the date) but, it still has the full hammer and when I looked very carefully (using Skennerton's book as a guide), the full grooves were present inside the frame for the unaltered full hammer. I also have a similar year Mk 1** with the bobbed hammer and the lightened mainspring for comparison. A "lunchbox special", parts that should have been further machined but were not? No FTR datings and it was covered in a reapplied black paint job that yielded to gel paint remover showing the original finish and dates. The Enfield crown matches the date. So it would appear that I found a revolver that avoided either being "castrated" or was simply made up for fun! Dave_n

Nice find. I acquired a near mint No. 2 MkI dated 1932 back in 1972,

will post pictures someday when I figure out how.
