Maltby No4 MkI*

I have a Maltby marked "No4 MkI*" sitting on my knee right now.

Aperture broken off the MkIII rear sight, but I have spares for my spares, so it's an easy fix.

"N22" Walnut stock---in fact all walnut furniture, dry, but in very good shape.

This is a pre-1968 import to the US, so no ugly stamps. London commercial proofs and "ENGLAND" on the receiver ring.

All matching, five-groove bore and a very snug bolt.

Ought to shoot well.

I realize this is small potatos to the "Fab Four", but it's a variety I've been wanting for awhile and it isn't seen often.

A nice find, now all you've got to do is replace that sight, give it some BLO and file off that incorrect * and it'll be as good as new .

Seriuosly though as you say a nice variant to have.

I've seen Stevens-Savage ones wrongly marked as well

I've seen one or two like that, but haven't come across any reference as to what Maltby were up to.

I wonder if these * rifles were some of the first to be produced at Maltby with MkII or III rearsights, and George, Herbert and Ernie in the number stamping department had got the wrong end of the stick and thought that this is what made the rifles a 1* spec....
