Went down to the history shelf and the first thing I noticed was a copy of Hatchers Notebook for £5. Been wanting a copy for ages but they want collectors prices over here for it.
Went to lay down the dosh and got speaking with the guy who obviously felt a tad uncomfortable about selling such "filth" as books about shooting. Typical Brit attitude. He said he'd got somemore but he didn't want to put them out.
I asked to have a look and he pulled out, when the shop was empty copies of "The Elements of shooting by Brigadier J A Barlow CBE dealing with the service rifle and open sight and aperture sight with the No 4 Rifle". First published in 1932 and revised with a final 4th edition in 1951 when the No4 bits were added a classic contemporary read for Enfield enthusiasts.
AGs Book of the rifle is another classic 40s-50s rifle shooting book dealing with small bore as well as full bore target shooting.
The real find was for me Major EGB Reynolds classic The lee Enfield rifle. I've seen copies in this condidtion go for £60 at gun fairs over here.
I got all 4 books for £15 from Oxfam, I had no conscience about taking advantage of his ignorance, his obviously anti gun stance made him beyond my pity.
I suppose in his ignorance he thought he'd got a good deal getting this "filth" of his hands to an obvious pervert like me.
