Got one of those mystery snipers

Couldn't resist getting one of the who knows where they came from or what they really are sniper 91/30's. From reports on the internet, the ones from SOG are part of one large shipment of cobbled together sniper rifles. Only question is why? There were reportedly more sniper rifles in Russia in WWII than all the other sniper rifles ever made before or since. Seems like there would be plenty of them to export. This one came in the country from Century.

In any case, what I got is not bad. Well worth what I paid for it if I can get the scope to adjust. The bore is pristine. The numbers are all forced matched. The receiver and much of the furniture have Izhevsk triangle with arrow marks. The bolt however has a Tula star. It came with a sling, ammo pouches, double oil can, tools.

It came with a piece of paper in Russian with what looks like specs on the scope. It also has hand written serial numbers for both the rifle and scope and some kind of acceptance stamp as though somebody had gone to some trouble to match them up in some way. Who knows what this means....if anything.

Well, another thing...... these scopes and mounts are supposed to be, by internet stuff you read, some kind of late model copy of the original scope. Could be, but the base has an Izhevsk stamp on it. Could that be some fakery of some sort? No date is on the scope or mount that I've been able to discover.

Whatever. At the moment I'm happy enough with it. I've paid more money for black powder replicas. This rifle, whatever the scope origin, has a genuine 1943 date on it. This I feel certain of. Just hope I can get it to shoot a group in 1.38 inches at 100 meters.

Did you mount the scope or did it come that way in the pic ? Just wonder if it got "bumped" around in shipping. It does look like fun to zero in. Range report

The scope was in a plastic bag with some padding and fastened to the rifle barrel with plastic tie downs. Everything was pretty well protected. The whole thing came inside a box inside another box.

The mount on the rifle was already attached. The scope bracket just slides in a slot and all I had to do is tighten a screw.

Due to two eye operations on my shooting eye I have not been able to actually shoot this rifle until now. But I thought I had made enough progress to give it a little test run........ so today I did.

At 100 yards I wasn't evening finding the paper so I went to the short range and starting working at about 25 yards. I managed to discover that the problem was with the elevation. By adjusting the top and bottom screws on the mount I managed to get it to the target. Then with a little find tuning with the nobs on the scope I was able to get it to shoot respectable. As you will note the one picture with the four hits in the red were the last adjustmentes.

Then I went back to the 100 yard range and got a decent group but not in the center. Noticed that the big screw that tightens the scope mount to the rifle wasn't tight. I didn't have a big enough screw driver to really tighten it and... my eye sight is not good yet and corrected glasses are still a month away. But.. this shoots better than I expected, and no need to put in any shims or file any of the mount metal either. The internal indicators line up in the center of the sight picture without such adjustments.

You have one of the Ukranian scopes and the better made PU mounts made out of machined steel and not cast steel or aluminum. I also have the same one on my repro PU that I assembled on a 43 ishvek 91/30.

You should set the top of the post reticle so that it is above the center of the lens (about 1/4 the distance from the center of the lens to the top/upper edge of the lens), then reset the elevation knob on 100 and then zero the rifle/scope by adjusting the elevation screws to your impact on target at 100 yards/meters.

This will put your eye/focus closer to the optical center of the lens for best parallex error and still give you plenty of elevation (100-500 meters typically) within the opticle center of the lens for longer range shooting if you ever try it.

I shoot mine regularily from 200-500 meters at steel silouettes (Chickens #200 meters, Pigs@300 meters, Turkeys@385 meters, rams@500 meters) in competition with ball ammo and handloads.
