I have driven myself nuts trying to work with the sights on my two 1884 Trapdoors. One has the 1873 buckhorn rear sight while the other has the Buffington sight. Both shoot extremely high at 100 yards and I almost end up aiming at the ground beneath the target. Hopefully that is about to change.
I bought a couple of 1903/03A3 front sight blades. I am going to replace the original front sight blades on the Trapdoors with these and then apply a little work with a file. Hopefully, I can get the POA and POI into a reasonable level of alignment. The front sight blades on the Trapdoors and 03/03A3 are held in place by a pin. You just need to punch the pin out, swap the blades, and replace the pin. I will be keeping the original blades so that I can return the Trapdoors to their original configuration if/when I need to. I would not think of doing this if it resulted in a permanent change to the rifles.
