This came my way recently...

Things a soldier would carry other than firearms, ammo, or uniforms. Meaning equipment such as ammo pouches, bayonets, holsters, oil cans, cleaning equipment, etc.

This came my way recently...

...and I have since found out what it is. Anyone care to have a go at identifying it? It is 13.5 inches long and about an inch wide.

Looks like the R and L are backward. That would be left and right, don't you think?

All right then, I'll tell you what it is. It seems it is part of the sighting system for the 25 pounder artillery gun. This bit is used for direct sighting at tanks and such like targets. An interesting piece of WW2 equipment.

It was mounted on the 25 pounder. I don't have a picture of how it was mounted but it was clamped on somehow.

I believe that the sight is held in what amounts to a pair of pipe clamps (the kind of thing that plumbers use to fix copper pipes to the wall of a house).
