G98 Mauser

This Mauser was brought to the range today. I got to shoot ten rounds through it. The chap who owns it is going to sell it later this year and I have first refusal on it. The finish is a bit worn but everything seems to have matching numbers, even the screw heads. There is plenty of rifling, but a little pitting in the grooves. I don't think the condition is too bad considering that it 93 years old and went through at least one war. It looks a bit better than the pictures show. We only have to agree a price. I offered him £150 but he just smiled at me and hinted that he would like a bit more.

I am not sure what these are worth. Anyway, a few pics.

This is one rifle that I would like to add to the collection.

Peter, G98s are fetching decent money, i think i would offer nearer £200/250 for it looking at the pics and your description. Just guessing mind, as it could be worth more, the ones i have seen have been £300 to £500 plus, depending on condition.

I suppose it depends on what you personally think its worth

Joe is right you wont get a decent G98 for 150 pounds anywere now. I think you would be lucky to get a decent one for 250.

Nice rifle. I don't know the exchange rate but in Virginia those go for $700.00 and up.

Peter ; I have a 1914 Amberg - it's regimental marked to the 13th Bavarian Inf Regt. It is matching wiht the exception of the bolt.

If the rifle you show in the pics is honestly6 matching down to the bolt... I'd be a sucker and punch a grand at such a peice... I love regimental marked gew98's and 1914 dated peices just make me drool. Too bad it's such a hassle to get such a peice to the US - I'd swap my 1909 Amberg kar98a marked to a bavarian Heavy Kav unit for it.

PS - The regimental is :

Bayerisches 1st Jaeger Regiment , Ersatz Battalion , 5th company , weapon number 79.

While I am at it here's my other two 1914 gems.... both are matching save one needs a cleaning rod # 11 ( anyone have a # 11 rod to swap ? )

Thanks for the information on the butt disc markings. My offer of £150 for the rifle was a little optimistic as I know they are worth more than that. The same chap has a Long Lee Enfield that I am buying off him when he decides to let it go. We will come to an arrangement on price for the both of them when the time comes.

Pete ; A nice long lee in original trim is one scarce bird over on this side of the pond - more so than the gewehr !. You are darn lucky to have such good pickings !>

The only thing that looks odd to me on the gew98 is the bolt looks very clean - and the receiver has the typical fine pitting. This usually indicates a mismatch bolt , or could it have just been stored separately for an extended period when the receiver was left uncared for ?.
