Mosin Nagant WZ 48

This is one of my favourites.

The Mosin Nagant WZ 48.

A Polish single shot trainer in calibre .22 LR.

IMHO this is a real trainer.

The rear and front sight are almost an exact copy of the Mosin Nagant M44.

So are the trigger and the weight of the rifle

It’s just plain fun to shoot this rifle.

It’s a great shooter too.

2” groups at 25 meters and 3” groups at 50 meters.

The rifle can perform better, it's the shooter that can't.

I haven’t had the chance to shoot it at 100 meters, but I will one of these days.

It did take some time to find the right ammo for it.

I started of with MagTech, but the bullets landed all over the place.

I also had a lot of misfires with this ammo.

I also tried “Swartclip”, South African ammo.

This wasn’t a success either.

CCI and American Eagle performed great at 25 and 50 meters.

I think I will try American Eagles at 100 meters, because this is high velocity ammo and it performed great in my Anschutz .22 rifle.

The bolt doesn’t look like the ones you know from the other Mosin Nagants.

It looks more like a Mauser type of bolt.

The ejector system is one I haven’t seen on any other rifle.

I know there are other rifles that use this very same system, but I haven’t seen one except on the WZ 48.

Don't know about Eley Duncan.

I tried almost all the .22LR brands I could find at my gunclub.

There are just not that many people that shoot this caliber at my gunclub.

However....if I find someone using this brand I'll try it and will post the results in here.

That goes for all the .22LR brands I find.

For now I'll stick with CCI and American Eagle.

They work just fine in this rifle.

I have not heard of or ever seen a MN 22 cal rifle. Yours looks exceptionally clean and new. I havent seen this rifle advertised in any surplus magazines. I hope you succeed in finding the right bullet for good accuracy. Good shooting...... Mike in California

I have seen them advertised by some of the usual sources. But they aren't C&R for some reason. First photos in detail I've ever seen of them though. I was curious how the 22 bullet was chambered. Great photo of the bullet in the chamber. I would suspect the metal piece that holds the case moves forward. When opening the bolt, and pulling back on it, the case is ejected as that metal case holding piece moves back, right? Maybe something an extractor on the bolt that flips it out of the chamber?

Sadly there are NO good shooting WZ48 out there

I had one and some buddys did, we could get non to perform acceptable.

They shot low, the only ammo, with which the sights did match up was CCI Stinger, this one did also give the best performance, but nothing spectacular.

This must be caused by not having the ammo, the guns were designed for, as barrels were all OK.

The chambers are a little wide, and some are dented because of dry firing.

3" at 50m is about all, one can get out of them.

With other trainers like hungarian Lampagyar or the Enfeilds one can get 2" at 100m with good ammo, premium ammo will do better, but high velocity does perform not that good.

I sold mine and kept the Lapagyar instead.

The constuktion was used earlier on a Mauser look alike Trainer, can not recall corectly, but WZ31 could be the designation for it.

Nearly the same action was used.

I can recommend CCI greentag as this seems to match the velocity and therefore the sighting of the older rifles I have in my collection. I wouldnt wish Eley on my worst enemy the guy who packs the ammo must dip the rounds in his earwax first having tested them with no ear protection!

Martin, did you slug the bore???

I always wanted to do that on my WZ48, but sold it too quickly.

I did ask a buddy, who lives in Poland, but he could not remember, what ammo they used in military youth camp, but they did not use WZ48, as he rememberd the rifles to have TOZ on them.

I don't think she shoots all that bad.

3" groups at 50 meters is not bad at all...........at least not for me.

I hope she performs just as well at 100 meters with the American Eagle .22LR ammo.

I haven't tried that yet.

It sure is much cheaper then training with the 7.62x54R ammo.

I'm happy I bought her and it's just plain fun to shoot her at the range.

You are right about one thing though.

It's not a rifle you can win matches with.

To answer your question.

NO, I didn't slug the bore,.

I just tried various brands of .22 LR and found out that some brands were good and others performed very bad.

Non of the ammo performed great though.
