Help I Received My RC K98

My Russian Capture K98 from SOG arrived. They had a weekly special and I picked it up for $160. The stock is very dark with the exception of the left side of the butt where there is a 3" X 3" area that is indented and obviously sanded (much lighter than the rest of the stock). It has the numbers 2667 stamped in the stock in this sanded area. The swastikas are peened (knew in advance that they were peened). All the metal has that ugly, black paint, including the entire bolt assembly. The bore is shiny.





How should I redo the stock to make the stock match in color due to the sanded area? How can I remove the black paint at least on the bolt assembly and in the receiver and chamber area? Shiny metal would look much better than the black paint.

With regards to the stock....I've used EasyOff oven cleaner for years. If you let it set for 15-20 minutes after spraying on, it tends to remove ALL stain, leaving you with what ever the natural wood was/is. It may require 2-3 applications, depending on what you have there. The key is to wipe the EasyOff completey off and use something like Windex to ensure it's all off....then allow the wood to dry completely...24 to 48 hours, depending on your humidity at the time. This gives you a clear indication of what you have. Nearly impossible to see when the wood is wet. If spots remain, reapply EasyOff and go through another cycle. Doing a 'patch' or 'spot' has never worked for me.





The paint is something I went through years ago with an Ishapur 2A1. Any paint remover will work...but be aware that you may have a blotchy blue under the paint. Most paint removers will not remove the blue. In my case I essentially re-painted using Aluma-Hyde II, a product that Brownell's sells. It takes 5-7 days to set up (not dry to the touch, just to harden) but is as hard as can be when allowed to properly cure. It gives off more of an appearance of parkerizing than paint....but it is durable.

I did remove the the finish using a paint remover I purchased from Home Depot and I'm very happy with the results. I had previously removed most of the black paint on the metal using MEK, which is very similar to Acetone but doesn't evaporate so quickly. At this point I have one coat of Tung oil on it. Based on how it looks tomorrow I will give it one or more additional coats of Tung oil. The stock now looks like natural wood and still has all of the character of a used Milsurp rifle. It doesn't look refinished it just looks like an older walnut stock. Comparing it to my Yugo M48, the stocks look very similar. I also put a coat of Tung oil on the M48 because the stock looked very dull and appeared to be drying out. The Tung oil seems to be a very good oil to use on these old Milsurps. I understand it dries much better and harder than BLO.

Sounds like a winner! I have used BLO, Tung Oil and Lemon Oil over the years. I've been very happy with all....they seem to end up in the same place.

I think Ez-Off is a harsh way to remove anything on wood, so do you have any other ways of removing the 'crap' with out such harsh chemicals as Ez-off?





I have a Yugo Rework k98 with a laminated stock with a reddish looking finish. It's been <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>around the war</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END-->, and I love it's history... it looks like an older version of my M16 that got destroyed during my last ambush!





I want to keep it as original as possible, so the Ez-off method will destroy the 'look' of the weapon. Fortunately, the metal is in good shape with about 80% finish remaining, but the Yugoslavs removed all of the markings.

Try something like mineral spirits or acetone along with very fine steel wool. It might take a lot of elbow grease.





Also, if you get the really thick stuff off, you might try wrapping it in old rags and leaving it in the sun on the dashboard of you car. That will really get a lot of crap out of the wood.

Thank you for the welcome. Just found this site and thought I,d join in. I'm a 98k sniper rifle collector but do have a Enfield T4 Sniper and shoot it on occasion.Groups about 2-1/2" at 100 with WW-2 ammo and about 1-1/2 with handloads.
