I hava a Lithgow SMLE,serial number E

288xx

MA

Lithgow

III*

1943 this is on the butt socket underneath the bolt handle, and also on the right rear of the buttstock.

all matching with the exception of the rear sight which is one of the of the windage adjustable type used on the earlier SMLE's. what really puzzles me is that the rear swivel base and the front swivel band is copper colored. this a very nice rifle and a excellent shooter, but was just curious as to why the copper colored parts.

Swivel bands, inner bands, etc were made of brass as a wartime material saving measure post '42 at Orange. (your swivel band should have an OA stamped visibly on one side)

The finish was originally blackened..almost a parkerized look to it.

Cheers,
