I was just quoting the "Mauser Military Rifles of the World" fourth edition.Kragujevac arsenal marked the guns with preduzece 44 and the Model 48 was the last produced there.

The Model 48 did not have top wood between the receiver and the rear sight. (Page 317 top picture)

My copy of Ball's book is the second edition and it only has 300 pages including the index. We are talking about two different things that came out of one factory. Take a look at this site. It mentions that some K98's were modified and given a model number of M98/48N but what we are talking about are K98's that weren't modified but only had the Nazi marks buffed off to some degree and weren't what could be called a M48..
