The Nordenfelt machine gun

The Nordenfelt was a manually operated machine gun in use at approximately the same time as the Gatling. The weapon had a row of 2 to 10 barrels and was operated by ragging a lever back and forth. It fired harder-hitting rounds and gave a greater terminal ballistic effect than the Gatling.

A hangfire was also less likely to render this weapon unserviceable due to the longer time between striking and unlocking than in the Gatling.

When I went through the Rifle depot in Winchester in 1982 there was a Nordenfelt on a wheeled carriage. The nick wallahs those unfortunates in the regimental nick used to bull it and then double around the barracks dragging it along!

An interesting weapon. I have seen the 4 barrel version at the Royal armoury in Leeds, as well as the 10 barrel version in Paris.

I wonder if the rate of fire differed with the addition of more barrels ? Anybody know ? A rate of almost a thousand rounds a minute is not to be sneezed at.

I know there were used on the Cerebus but I don't know if there were any others in Australia.
