First Shotgun

Well I finally obtained a shotgun courtesy of the local gun amnesty. Never owned one before. Not much to look at but for $25AUD I'm not complaining.
As far as I can figure it was made in Birmingham by Holloway and Co around the 1900 - 1920 period. Nitro proofed, Birmingham viewed.
Automatic safety, automatic extractors.
Action tight, bore very good. External finish = crap.
Going to be an upcoming project to clean it up.
Anything else anyone can add ?

Nothing a bit of elbow grease won't fix.

After spending $A25, I'd invest in a re-blue job as it seems to be mechanically sound....but.... as the barrels etc are probably soft soldered steer clear of modern caustic blueing methods.

I used to have the formula for the blueing used on the early SMLE's and was contemplating giving that a go if I can find it. Any other suggestions ?

I think I might be tempted to buff it up and leave it in the white.

That would certainly be an easier option Karl. Looking into rust bluing there are a lot of things that could go wrong.
