Anyone remember Rhodesia ???

Post by TaosBob101 » Tue Jul 12, 2005 2:23 pm

I'll post my recruitment packet from 1975 from the RLI (Rhodesian Light Infantry), the BSAP (British South African Police) and C Sqdn, 22nd Special Air Service, sometime. The original postage stamps are worth something. In the mean time how about a nice Panhard Armored Car w/90mm main gun. Those guys have that "where's Mugabe look " ! Mugabe is the only PM they have ever had since Ian Smith, whether the elections have said otherwise or not. His "special trops" were trained by North Korea...The country is on the verge of ecomonic collapse, he even invited himself to the Pope's funneral. I heard now, he is burning farms and villages to get those who supported him in the first place ,off those properties.

Robert G. Mugabe, I hope your days are numbered

I would be interested in seeing the recruitment pack Bob, I got one in 1977 and was close to joining the RLI, as i recall the address was a PO box number, Causeway, Rhodesia.

JOE...

Mine too, I was a young soldier late of the 101st Airborne. Living in CO, I had friends who worked at or did freelance stuff for Soldier of Fortune mag here in Colorado. I worked for a firearms dealer part-time, who supplied arms and ammo for magazine shoots or tests. After I was invited one-time and saw their recents slides of Rhodesia and the fighting in old South West Africa, I became a "convert" to those good people and their stuggle against their communist "neighbors", (Angola, Mozambique,Zambia, etc).

Did I join ??? No, not that they would not have me, I was young and had no money. It was about 2 thousand USD (or whatever in SA Rand) just to get to Jo'Burg, then make your way up to Salisbury. I ended up helping with Med supplies that were shipped by SOF. I even gave up 2 Browning HP 9mm's to be sold or given away after the SOF team went back in about 1978 or so.Easy to get pistols into SA ,not so easy to get them out. Who cares,I could get all I wanted in the States. It was a piece of change for me in those days, but made me feel like I had done something...

I'll post my stuff and somemore pics later.

To all that do not know about all this... Type the word "Rhodesia" and do a serach on the Net...

Here's a pic of the RLI monument that was moved to SA before Mugabe got a hold of it in 1980... and another of a K-CAR jump in the bush ...

Bob, some great photos and experiences of the Rhodesian bush war recorded on this site...

....including a lot of scanned pages from SOF magazine on the conflict.

I have a bunch of SOF mags tucked away somewhere myself, i will have to dig em out and have a flick through them.
